That is the short answer, and it covers most worries about boating in the rain. A gray forecast the night before means very little in Pittsburgh, where a rainy afternoon can turn into a bright evening on the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers. No one can say the day before exactly what Pittsburgh weather will do, so we do not try. On the morning of your rental, we look at the real river and weather conditions and decide whether boats go out. That decision is ours alone.
The call is based on the river and weather conditions we see that morning, not on the forecast from the night before.
Pittsburgh forecasts change fast. A morning that looked soaked on Tuesday night can be dry and calm by Wednesday at 9 AM. If we canceled every rental with rain somewhere in the forecast, a lot of people would lose good days on the water for nothing.
Waiting also works the other way. We will not send a group out onto rough or unsafe water just to keep a booking. Looking at the actual conditions that morning is the fairest way to protect both your day and your safety.
You can follow along yourself. The National Weather Service office in Pittsburgh posts local forecasts and radar, and it is a good place to check hourly timing, not just the daily icon. A day marked rainy often has a long dry stretch, and our 4 hour and 8 hour rentals run between 9 AM and 9 PM, so there is room to plan around a passing shower.
Rain and thunderstorms are not the same thing on a boat. Rain makes you wet. Lightning makes open water dangerous, and a pontoon has no cabin to duck into.
The National Weather Service says most lightning injuries and deaths on boats happen on small boats with no cabin, and its lightning safety guidance is simple: if thunderstorms are forecast, do not go out. If you hear thunder while you are already out, head back to the dock right away. Once a storm passes, the agency advises waiting 30 minutes after the last rumble before heading back out.
Our weather call is about more than what falls from the sky. Heavy rain can push river levels up, speed up the current and wash logs and branches into the water. Our policy covers river conditions as well as weather, so a sunny morning after a big storm can still be a no go. The weather call on the day is ours. Changes before that are up to you, and the timing matters.
You can reschedule your rental up until 72 hours before your launch time. If a long range forecast looks bad and you would rather pick another day, make that change while you are still outside the 72 hour window.
Inside 72 hours, our policy is firm: if you try to reschedule later than 72 hours before your rental, no refunds are issued. That is why we suggest waiting for our morning call instead of canceling on your own because of a gloomy forecast. If we cancel, you are covered. If you cancel inside the window, you are not.
Life happens. In a true, unavoidable emergency, all or part of your payment may be applied to a future rental, and we will do our best to find a time that works for you. If that is not possible, a refund is given at our discretion. Call us at (412) 773-0988 as soon as you can.

If we cancel for weather or river conditions, you can reschedule, and if no date works, you get a full refund. If you would rather move your trip, do it more than 72 hours before launch.

Head for the dock as soon as you see dark clouds building or hear thunder. Make sure everyone has a life jacket on, slow down and keep everyone seated low in the boat.
