The three rivers are wide and busy on summer weekends. A few habits keep your dog safe the whole trip.
Even strong swimmers can tire quickly in moving water. A dog life jacket keeps your dog floating, and the handle lets you lift your dog back aboard. The American Kennel Club's boating tips recommend a snug fit around the neck so your dog's front legs cannot slip through.
Use the leash at the dock and while boarding. Once you are underway, a short leash keeps an excited dog from jumping over the side when a bird or another boat goes by.
Decks and seats get hot in direct sun. Keep your dog in the shade, offer water often, and watch for heavy panting or drooling. If your dog seems overheated, slow down, move to shade and give them a drink.

Pennsylvania requires a wearable, Coast Guard approved life jacket for every person on board, and children 12 and younger must wear one while underway on boats 20 feet or shorter. Anyone driving who was born on or after January 1, 1982 needs a Pennsylvania Boating Safety Education Certificate.
If no one in your group wants to drive, ask about a captain when you book. That leaves everyone free to look after the dog and enjoy the view.
