Acrisure Stadium Concerts: Start the Day on the River

May 16, 2023

Can you make Acrisure Stadium concerts part of a day on the river? Yes: book an afternoon pontoon cruise past the stadium and the Point, return to the dock, then head to the show. Our rentals wrap up by 9 PM, before most stadium shows reach the encore, so think of the boat as the best pregame in Pittsburgh, not a seat for the concert itself.

A pontoon boat rental in Pittsburgh from Vic's Boat Park in McKees Rocks puts you on the Ohio River just downstream from the North Shore. Below we cover where the stadium sits on the river, how to time a cruise around a show, what event days are like on the water, and how to plan so the whole group makes it to the gates relaxed.

Seeing Acrisure Stadium From the River

Acrisure Stadium sits on the North Shore, right where the Allegheny and Monongahela join to form the Ohio. From the water you get a view most concertgoers never see: the stadium bowl, the Carnegie Science Center beside it, and the downtown skyline across the river at the Point.

It is a short cruise upriver from our dock, so even a 4 hour rental leaves plenty of time to idle past the North Shore, circle near the Point State Park fountain and take in the bridges. On a show day, the North Shore gets busier as the afternoon goes on, so the view from the water is a calm way to soak in the buildup.

How a Concert Day Cruise Works

The simplest plan is an early start. Book a 4 hour block in the late morning or early afternoon, spend it on the rivers, and be back at Vic's Boat Park with time to change, eat and get to the stadium before the gates open.

Timing matters more than usual on a concert day, for two reasons:

  • Rentals are back to back. We give a 5 minute grace period on returns, and after that late charges apply, so plan to head back to the dock early.
  • Traffic builds near the North Shore. Leave extra time to get from McKees Rocks to the stadium once you are back on land.

Check the official Acrisure Stadium events calendar for the show time, gate time and the stadium's bag rules before you book. Then work backward to pick your rental start.

Acrisure Stadium Concerts and Event Days on the Water

Big shows bring a crowd to the rivers too. Expect more pleasure boats near the Point and along the North Shore, plus kayaks, tour boats and the usual barge traffic in the channel.

  • Slow down near the shore and around boats tied along the walls.
  • Give barges plenty of room. They cannot stop or turn quickly.
  • Check for river restrictions. Big events can bring temporary rules on the water, so check local news before you go and follow any posted instructions.

A calm, patient pace near the stadium keeps everyone safe and makes the views better anyway.

Plan Around the Show

A little planning turns a good concert day into a great one. Here is a simple checklist to work through with your group.

Before You Book

  • Confirm the concert date and times on the stadium's site.
  • Count your group and pick a boat that fits. Our pontoons carry 7 to 10 people depending on the boat.
  • Book early. Summer weekend dates can fill up, and rentals run in set 4 hour and 8 hour blocks.

Choose Your Driver

The person at the helm needs to be someone who signed the rental agreement. Anyone born on or after January 1, 1982 needs a Pennsylvania Boating Safety Education Certificate to operate. No one may operate the boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs, so pick a driver who will stay sharp. The Fish and Boat Commission regulations recap lays out the rules. Not sure anyone in your group wants to drive? Ask about a captain when you book.

Watch the Weather

We make the weather call on the morning of your rental. If we cancel for weather or river conditions, you can reschedule, or get a full refund if rescheduling will not work.

Pregame Ideas for Your Group

The boat is the warm up, so make it feel like part of the show.

  • Build a playlist of the artist you are seeing. Several of our pontoons have a Bluetooth capable stereo.
  • Pack a picnic of sandwiches, snacks and cold drinks in a cooler. Grills and stoves are not allowed on board.
  • Take the group photo with the stadium or the skyline behind you.
  • Bring sunscreen and water. An afternoon on the river is a lot of sun before a long night on your feet.

Keep valuables you need for the show, like tickets and phones, dry and secure.

Who a Concert Day Cruise Is Best For

A pregame on the river works for almost any group heading to a stadium show:

  • Birthday crews who want the day to feel bigger than one event.
  • Friends visiting from out of town who should see the city from the water while they are here.
  • Couples turning a concert into a full date.
  • Families with older kids who are going to their first big show.

Picking the Right Boat for Your Crew

Every pontoon in our fleet has a capacity plate, and we never go over the limit for people or weight. Here is how our boats line up:

  • Up to 10 guests: the Bennington S and the Sun Tracker Party Barge 20DLX.
  • Up to 9 guests: the Sun Tracker Party Barge.
  • Up to 8 guests: the Sweet Water Godfrey.
  • Up to 7 guests: the Sea-Doo Switch, the liveliest ride of the group.

Bigger group? Book two boats and cruise together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you watch an Acrisure Stadium concert from a boat?

Not from one of our rentals. Our boats run from 9 AM to 9 PM, and most stadium concerts go later than that. The better plan is a cruise before the show: see the stadium and the Point from the water in the afternoon, return to our dock, then head to the concert.

Where is Acrisure Stadium?

Acrisure Stadium is on Pittsburgh's North Shore, beside the Carnegie Science Center, where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio. From our dock at Vic's Boat Park in McKees Rocks, it is a short cruise up the Ohio River.

How long should we rent a boat before a concert?

A 4 hour block is the right fit for most concert days. It gives you time to cruise past the stadium, the Point and the bridges without rushing. Start early enough that you are back at the dock with time to spare before the gates open.

Do I need a license to drive a rental pontoon in Pittsburgh?

In Pennsylvania, anyone born on or after January 1, 1982 needs a Boating Safety Education Certificate to operate a boat with a motor. The driver must also sign our rental agreement. If no one in your group qualifies or wants to drive, ask about a captain when you book.

What happens if it rains on concert day?

We decide on the morning of your rental based on weather and river conditions. If we cancel, you can reschedule your trip, and if it cannot be rescheduled you get a full refund. You can also reschedule on your own up to 72 hours before your start time.
