Can You Rent a Boat in Pittsburgh for a Birthday or Anniversary?

August 17, 2026

Can you rent a boat in Pittsburgh for a birthday or anniversary? Yes. A private pontoon is one of the easiest ways to celebrate in the city: you book a 4 or 8 hour rental, bring your own food, music and guests, and spend the day or evening on the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers with the skyline as your backdrop.

A birthday boat rental works for a small family celebration or a group of friends, and an anniversary on the water can be as simple as two people and a sunset. Below we explain how a pontoon boat rental in Pittsburgh works for both, which boat fits your group, what affects the cost, and the mistakes to avoid. Every trip starts from our dock at Vic's Boat Park in McKees Rocks, on the Ohio River minutes from downtown.

How a Birthday Boat Rental Works With Us

There's no special party package to figure out. You rent the whole boat, so only your guests are on board, and the plan for the day is yours.

  • Rental blocks: 4 hours or 8 hours, between 9 AM and 9 PM.
  • Group size: 7 to 10 guests depending on the boat.
  • Driving: you can drive yourself if you qualify, or ask about a captain when you book.
  • Dogs: welcome, so the family pup can join the celebration.
  • Booking: rentals are paid in full to book, and you can reschedule up to 72 hours before your launch time.

Arrive 5 to 10 minutes early on your first rental for our safety briefing, and plan to have the person paying and every passenger sign the waiver before you leave the dock.

Pick the Right Boat for Your Celebration

Start with an honest headcount, including kids and the driver. Every pontoon has a capacity plate with a people limit and a weight limit, and we hold every rental to whichever comes first.

  • Bennington S or Sun Tracker Party Barge 20DLX: up to 10 guests.
  • Sun Tracker Party Barge: up to 9 guests.
  • Sweet Water Godfrey: up to 8 guests, with a table and cup holders.
  • Sea-Doo Switch: up to 7 guests and the most power in the fleet.

For an anniversary for two, any boat works. For a bigger birthday, pick a boat rated above your guest list so nobody is squeezed. Our guide to what size boat you need for your group goes deeper.

Drive Yourself or Ask About a Captain

Most groups drive themselves, and our pontoons are simple to handle after the safety briefing. The rules for the driver are set by Pennsylvania:

  • Anyone born on or after January 1, 1982 needs a Pennsylvania Boating Safety Education Certificate to drive a boat over 25 horsepower, and every pontoon in our fleet is over that line.
  • Only people who sign the rental agreement may drive.
  • The driver must stay sober for the whole trip.

If nobody in your group has a certificate, or the guest of honor would rather not be the one steering, ask about a captain when you book. That way the birthday person or the anniversary couple can sit back and enjoy the ride.

Planning a Birthday on the Water

A birthday on a pontoon is less about decorations and more about the day itself: friends, music, the sun and the city skyline. A loose plan keeps it fun.

  • Pick the time of day: a morning or afternoon block for swimming and sun, an evening block for sunset photos.
  • Plan one big moment: slow down near the Point for the cake, the song and the group photo.
  • Keep food simple: finger food and a cake in a hard container travel best. No stoves or grills are allowed.
  • Pack for everyone: water, sunscreen, towels and a trash bag.

Planning an Anniversary on the Water

An anniversary calls for a slower pace than a birthday. Fewer people, softer light and a route that ends with the skyline at sunset. An evening 4 hour rental is a natural fit.

Time It Around Sunset

Sunset in Pittsburgh ranges from about 8:15 PM in early May to nearly 9 PM in late June, then moves earlier through late summer and fall. Our rentals end by 9 PM, so from mid August on you can catch the sunset over the rivers before you head back.

Keep It Personal

Bring a favorite playlist, a small cooler with your choice of drinks and snacks, and a jacket for after dark. Recreate a first date spot from the water, or slow down by the fountain at the Point for a toast. Our guide to romantic boat rides in Pittsburgh has more date night ideas.

The Best Views for Your Celebration

From our dock in McKees Rocks, the best of the city is a short cruise upriver on the Ohio.

  • The West End Bridge: the first big view of the skyline as you head upriver.
  • The Point: the fountain, the bridges and downtown in one frame, right where the three rivers meet.
  • The North Shore: the Science Center, the stadium and the ballpark along the Allegheny.
  • Station Square and Mount Washington: along the Monongahela, with the hillside rising above the river.

On summer and fall weekends, the downtown stretch is a slow, no wake zone from 3 PM Friday until midnight Sunday, which makes it a great place to slow down and take photos.

What Affects the Cost of a Birthday Boat Rental

The price depends on a few choices you make when you book, so it helps to know them before you look at dates.

  • Rental length: a 4 hour block or a full 8 hours.
  • Which boat: our pontoons differ in size and power.
  • A captain: ask about it when you book.
  • Add ons: such as the Accidental Damage Waiver.
  • Sales tax: added to every rental.

Celebration Mistakes to Avoid

  • Going over capacity. No boat leaves our dock over its people or weight limit. If the guest list grows, call us to switch boats or add a second one.
  • Forgetting the driver rules. Make sure at least one guest has a boating safety certificate, or ask about a captain.
  • Ignoring the forecast. We make the weather call the morning of your rental, and if we cancel you can reschedule or get a full refund.
  • Underestimating the sun. Bring shade, hats, sunscreen and plenty of water for a long day.
  • Running late. There's a 5 minute grace period on returns, so plan to head back with time to spare.
  • Riding in the wrong spot. No one may ride outside the passenger area of a pontoon while it is moving, so keep the birthday photos off the bow.

Every person aboard needs a wearable life jacket, and children 12 and younger must wear one while underway on boats 20 feet or shorter. The Fish and Boat Commission regulations recap lists the full rules.

Book Your Date Early

Summer weekends are the most popular days on the rivers, so book as soon as you know your date. A weekday can be a good choice for a quieter celebration.

  • Pick your date and your 4 or 8 hour block.
  • Choose a boat that fits your headcount.
  • Confirm who will drive, or ask about a captain.
  • Mention your dog if your pup is coming along.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you rent a boat for a birthday party in Pittsburgh?

Yes. You can rent one of our private pontoons for 4 or 8 hours between 9 AM and 9 PM, with room for 7 to 10 guests depending on the boat. Bring your own food, cake and music, and cruise the three rivers from our dock in McKees Rocks, minutes from downtown.

What is a good boat for a birthday party?

A pontoon is a great choice. It's stable, easy to board and has open deck seating so your group can sit together. Pick a boat rated above your headcount for comfort. Our Bennington S and Sun Tracker Party Barge 20DLX each carry up to 10 guests.

How much does a birthday boat rental cost?

The cost depends on the boat you choose, whether you book 4 or 8 hours, whether you add a captain or an Accidental Damage Waiver, and sales tax. Email subscribers get a discount. Check current rates and open dates on our booking page, or call (412) 773-0988.

Do you need a license to drive a rental boat in Pennsylvania?

Pennsylvania doesn't issue a boating license, but anyone born on or after January 1, 1982 needs a Boating Safety Education Certificate to drive a boat over 25 horsepower. Every pontoon in our fleet is over that line. If no one in your group has one, ask about a captain when you book.

Is a boat ride a good anniversary idea?

Yes. A private pontoon gives the two of you the river, the skyline and the sunset without a crowd. An evening rental timed around sunset works best, and you can bring your own drinks, snacks and music. Ask about a captain if neither of you wants to drive.
